Formula
Standard drinks = (volume_mL × (ABV ÷ 100) × 0.789) ÷ 10
Grams ethanol = volume_mL × (ABV ÷ 100) × 0.789
Worked example. 375 mL at 4.8% ABV → 375 × 0.048 × 0.789 = 14.2 g ÷ 10 = 1.42 standard drinks.
Questions
10 g of pure ethanol. That is the Australian reference; other countries define it differently, from 8 g in the UK to 14 g in the US.
A 375 mL can of full-strength beer at 4.8% ABV works out to about 1.4 standard drinks, which is why cans are usually labelled with a standard-drinks figure rather than assumed to be exactly one.
