Formula
Calories from alcohol = volume_mL × (ABV ÷ 100) × 0.789 × 7
Total calories = calories from alcohol + (carbs_g × 4)
Worked example. 568 mL at 4.5% ABV with 13 g carbs → 141 kcal alcohol + 52 kcal carbs = 193 kcal.
Questions
Pure ethanol carries about 7 calories per gram, between fat (9) and carbohydrate or protein (4). Nearly all of a spirit's calories come from alcohol, since it has no carbs.
Residual sugar. A malty beer left with more unfermented carbohydrate adds 4 calories per gram on top of the alcohol calories — that's the gap between a regular lager and a light beer at similar ABV.
