Formula
Scaled ingredient = per-serving oz × servings Water to add = (spirit oz + modifier oz, scaled) × dilution % Total volume = all scaled ingredients + water
Worked example. 20 servings, spirit 2 oz + modifier 0.75 oz scaled = 55 oz alcoholic base × 20% = 11.0 oz water.

Questions

Shaking or stirring with ice doesn't just chill a drink, it dilutes it — typically 20–25% of the final volume. Batch it without that water and a pre-mixed cocktail served over ice or up will taste too strong and unbalanced.
Shaking incorporates more ice melt and air than stirring in the same time, so shaken drinks pick up more dilution. Both are averages — adjust to taste.
Only the alcoholic base and modifier — the water stands in for the ice melt those spirits would have picked up when mixed to order.
